A Prospective Study of the Effects of Lithuim on Thyroid Function

Abstract

|
Tests of thyroid function were carried out on 20 manic patients before and 2 to 6weeks after the, were treated with lithium.
The average serum lithium concentration was 0.69 mEq/l. Although the paratmeters of thyroi function were within normal limits, significant decrease in T3, T4 and significant increase in TSH at 2 to eeks on lithium.
These results suggest that short-term treatment of lithium may effect the thyroid function.
